Cowboy Bedroll

A cowboy bedroll, is a sleeping bag, commonly used by the North American cowboy of the American and Canadian West during the 1800s and is still used today by modern campers and hikers. The cowboy bedroll was more than just a sleeping bag, but actually “mini-home” on the range,〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Cowboy’s bedroll was much more than a sleeping bag )〕 and often used as a modern day backpack.
A bedroll not only served as a common sleeping bag, but also carried personal possessions, such as cooking utensils, which were wrapped in canvas or sometimes just in make-shift heavy grain sack cloth, called a “sugan” (“sougan” or “suggan”) and the cowboy’s “war bag” or “possibles sack”, which were tied or strapped within the bedroll.
A well-planned and well-stocked bedroll, carefully rolled up and tied, were often slung across a horse’s back behind the saddle, or if it was too large, his bedroll might be carried on the chuck wagon. Smaller bedrolls were often carried on the cowboy’s horse.
Sugans — Sugans were heavy blankets, or often quilts, that contained some padding that made them warm for cover. The same term is sometimes used for a small tarp or canvas that could be draped over a tree branch or propped up with sticks to form a rudimentary one-man tent. A sugan might be a tent or a sleeping bag. In Texas or across the Great Plains, sugans helped provide both shelter and warmth as much as possible.
War Bags or Possible Sacks — These were canvas bags or often just old grain or flower sacks in which the cowboy kept prized possessions and were often rolled up into the bedroll. They could be grabbed up and taken along in a hurry.
